5 Reg flags of narcissistic tendencies

Narcissism is a personality trait characterised by an inflated sense of self-importance, a constant need for admiration and external validation.

While not everyone exhibiting narcissistic tendencies has a narcissistic personality disorder, engaging with broadly-defined narcissists can pose significant challenges in personal and professional settings.

People with narcissistic tendencies have a delicate façade. On the surface, they appear charming, confident and successful. They may exude an air of superiority, believing themselves to be exceptional and deserving of special treatment.

However, underneath this façade there is a fragile sense of self-esteem, often rooted in insecurities and a bottomless need for external validation. Their preoccupation with their appearance and accomplishments serves as a means to boost their self-image and impress others.

In an effort to maintain this inflated self-image narcissists often engage in manipulative, exploitative and dismissive behaviours. They prioritise their own needs and they dismiss the feelings and opinions of those around them.

This behaviour can strain relationships, leaving friends, family and colleagues often feeling hurt, confused, or even abused.

Here are 5 red flags of narcissistic tendencies:

1. Superiority: Narcissists possess an inflated sense of self-importance, believing themselves to be superior and entitled to special treatment. They may demand excessive praise, recognition and privileges.

2. Need for Adulation: Narcissists crave constant attention, validation and admiration from others. They seek out compliments, praise and even fame, relying on external sources for emotional fulfilment.

3. Envy: Narcissists are envious of the success and achievements of others, especially those who receive attention and admiration. They may feel threatened by their accomplishments and resort to sabotage or downplaying their achievements.

4. Arrogance: Narcissists often exhibit excessive pride in themselves, accompanied by contempt for others. They may look down on people around them, dismiss their opinions and feelings, and manipulate them for their own gain.

5. Lack of Empathy: One of the defining traits of narcissists is their lack of empathy. They struggle to understand the feelings and perspectives of others, making them insensitive to their needs and willing to exploit them without remorse.

If you find yourself in a relationship with a narcissistic person, it's crucial to recognise the signs and protect your own emotional wellbeing. While narcissists may not be open to change, you can focus on establishing healthy boundaries and prioritising your own emotional needs.

If you're struggling to cope with the impact of narcissism in your life, professional help can provide valuable guidance and support. Therapy can help you understand the dynamics of narcissistic relationships, develop coping mechanisms and strengthen your own self-esteem.
